Going Native

Our US travels have taken us through several Native American Reservations. Today we’re on our way to the Grand Canyon North Rim and en route make one of the most remarkable and interesting visits we’ve made so far, to a Navajo National Monument, an ancient canyon alcove dwelling ‘Betatakin’ where Puebloans lived 1250 to 1300.

A woody walkway down to a viewing area where, across the canyon (with binoculars) you see the remains of 135 rooms and courtyards that housed a farming Native American community of 100. Set in the canyon; deep enough for shelter, warmed by the sun and cool in the shade.

Archiologists found wood, bark, reed, seed pots, tools and baskets, apparently left ready for their return after draught sent the community to find a new site.

I want to be a Puebloan.

Along the woody footpath to see Betatakin.

Yes, the whole village is set in this natural canyon alcove.

Old and the wheels are falling off… an exhibit at the Visitor Centre.
